GRC Feature Panel Installation on Curtain Wall Facade

Specialist installation of large-format GRC architectural facade panels using crane lifting operations and high-level access on a modern UK commercial building.

Large-Format GRC Panel Installation on Modern Curtain Wall System

This project involved the installation of large-format GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) architectural feature panels onto a modern curtain wall facade system on a live UK construction site.

The package required high-precision installation, blind crane lifting operations, work at height and close coordination between installers and the crane operator during the positioning of heavy facade elements.

The finished facade combines reflective curtain wall glazing with textured vertical GRC features, creating a clear architectural rhythm across the elevation.

Scope of Works

The installation package included:

  • Installation of architectural GRC facade panels
  • Blind crane lifting operations using radio communication
  • High-level installation using MEWP access
  • Positioning and alignment of vertical feature fins
  • Bracket interface coordination
  • Waterproof sealing and detailing around fixing points
  • Installation tolerance checks across curtain wall zones
  • Safe handling of suspended heavy facade components

Specialist GRC Installation

GRC is a specialist architectural facade material used on commercial developments where appearance, weight and tolerances matter.

Unlike standard facade panels, these elements required precise alignment, controlled lifting operations, careful handling near glazing systems and accurate positioning during installation.

Some panels weighed approximately 400kg and were lifted directly into position using crane support.

Because of restricted visibility from the crane position, many lifts were carried out blind and controlled through radio communication between the installers and crane operator.

This type of facade installation requires constant coordination, concentration and installation accuracy.

Work at Height and Crane Coordination

The works were carried out at height using powered access platforms.

Weather conditions and wind exposure played an important role throughout lifting operations due to large suspended panel sizes, movement near curtain wall glazing, limited working space and precision alignment requirements.

Every installation sequence required controlled positioning to avoid unwanted panel movement, glazing impact, bracket misalignment or damage during installation.

Precision Alignment and Facade Detailing

A key part of the package involved maintaining clean visual alignment across the vertical GRC feature lines.

Because the panels were installed directly onto curtain wall interface zones, installation tolerances were highly visible across the finished elevation.

The works included bracket preparation, positioning checks, fixing alignment, sealant application and final visual adjustment during installation.

Attention to detail was critical throughout the installation process.

Architectural Result

The completed facade combines curtain wall glazing, textured GRC architectural features, vertical facade depth and clean modern detailing.

The contrast between dark glazing and warm-toned GRC elements creates a strong visual identity across the building envelope.
